 The  Alvirne Memorial Chapel

Chapel Through Gate

The Alvirne Chapel on Derry Road was built in 1909 by Dr. Alfred K. Hills as a memorial to his late wife Virginia. It has been in constant use over these 115 years for religious services, weddings, and funerals, school tours, and other events.

Following serious flooding in the basement of the Chapel this spring, The Alvirne Trustees, responsible for maintaining the Chapel and its grounds, are embarking on a project over the next year or two to make much needed repairs to the building.  This includes but it not limited to assessing the slate roof, repointing the granite on the outside of the building, removing plantings that are impinging on the foundation, regrouting around stained glass windows, installing a drainage system to keep the foundation stable, and more.

While the chapel will continue to be available for events throughout these restorations, there will be changes.  For the foreseeable future, the basement level where the bathrooms are located will be closed to the public.  The large, and beautiful, Japanese Maple tree near the side entrance will be removed to protect the roof and the foundation. Other planting beds will be changed to expose more of the foundation as well.

These restorative changes will help keep the Alvirne Chapel as an important and vibrant symbol of the legacy of the Hills Family in Hudson.  When the project is complete, the Trustees look forward to having an open house for the community.
